    • What are my options if creams dont work?
    • Will psoriasis ever go away?

    A note from Cleveland Clinic

Psoriasis, an itchy skin condition, can come and go throughout your life. Its related to an overactive immune response and is not contagious. If you have skin changes that arent going away, talk to your healthcare provider. There is no cure for psoriasis, but psoriasis treatments can improve symptoms. Your provider may prescribe a special cream or moisturizer or medications. Other therapies are available if creams or medicines dont work. Maintaining your overall health will also help improve symptoms.

Try A Moisturizer With A Keratolytic Ingredient

For particularly thick plaques, Dr. Newsom suggests applying a lotion that contains a keratolytic, or a softening and peeling agent, like salicylic acid, lactic acid, or urea. That will help dissolve some of the scales. For instance, check out CeraVe Psoriasis Moisturizing Cream, $19, or Gold Bond Ultimate Psoriasis Relief Cream, $8.

However, note these ingredients, particularly salicylic acid, can irritate the skin, exacerbate dryness, and in extreme cases be toxic. So be sure to use keratolytic moisturizers as directed and only on the thickest plaques rather than across large swaths of skin.

Diet Modification: Eat Better Feel Better

According to a review published in 2017 in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, people with psoriasis have an increased risk of celiac disease, an autoimmune condition in which gluten a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye causes inflammation that can damage the small intestine. That connection may explain why some people with psoriasis report that eating a gluten-free diet helps them feel better. While following a gluten-free diet is essential if you have celiac disease, theres little evidence that supports removing gluten from your diet if you dont. Anecdotally, it works, Weiss says, but it has never been proven scientifically. If a gluten-free diet makes your psoriasis feel better, however, thats great. Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before starting a gluten-free diet.

Expose skin to sunlight: Some sun exposure can help keep mild psoriasis at bay. Researchers recommend multiple but short sunlight exposures for people with psoriasis who can tolerate sunlight.

Manage stress: Since stress is a psoriasis trigger, it is good to relax and manage stress to keep inflammation from developing.

    Strategies To Eliminate Psoriasis

I have a terrible case of psoriasis, writes this weeks House Call. My doctor is recommending these horrible immune-suppressing drugs and steroids that cause cancer and other problems. What can I do other than to take these drugs?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease of the skin that affects over three percent of the U.S. population , and typically involves scaling and inflammation.

Most often, psoriasis results in patches of thick, red skin covered with silvery scales. These patches, sometimes called plaques, usually itch or feel sore. They most often occur on the elbows, legs, scalp, lower back, face, palms and soles of the feet, but they can occur anywhere on the body.

The disease may also affect the fingernails, toenails, soft tissues of the genitals and inside the mouth. Often the skin around affected joints starts to crack. Some people with psoriasis experience joint inflammation that produces symptoms of arthritis, called psoriatic arthritis.

Altogether, it makes for an absolutely miserable experience.

Ive been a doctor for 30 years and have practiced Functional Medicine for 20 of those years. Ive witnessed the heartbreak of psoriasis with its scaly, itchy, inflamed, peeling skin that leads to arthritis and joint pain for some people.

The problem with current medical thinking is that it treats diseases individually, requiring specific diagnoses and labels like you have psoriasis. And then you get the cream, the steroids and other short-term solutions.

What Is The Relationship Between Psoriasis And Your Diet

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disorder. The body mistakenly attacks its own tissue, explains Wesdock. It starts overproducing skin cells, which lays down plaques on your skin. Plaques are red, scaly patches that can be itchy or painful. Sometimes psoriasis is accompanied by psoriatic arthritis, an inflammatory joint condition.

Neither of these conditions is caused by anything you eat, but theres an important link between your diet and psoriasis. Many foods are known to cause inflammation throughout the body. In some people, this widespread irritation can make the symptoms of psoriasis worse.

    Psoriasis Cure At Home

To treat my psoriasis scalp at home I identfied strategies that help ease the symptoms.

One of these methods that really stand out to me is coconut oil. Its not just that coconut oil in general is a very useful tool for a lot of things.

But, if you pour and massage the coconut oil onto the psoriasis on your scalp some things happen. Your extremly dry and dead skin, due to psoriasis, becomes moist and oiled, which can result in reduced itchying and burning. Thats exactly what it does for me.

I also feel for more relieved and calmed down due to less burning.

If you massage the coconut oil onto your scalp leave it to soak and sit for 20 minutes or more.

I even left it sit overnight. Just put a towel over your pillow and good night. Shower it off in the morning and feel the benefit. This approach gives you some time to try other strategies that may trigger your psoriasis.

Because your diet has also been shown to result in potential psoriasis triggers. How can diet affect your scales? How can you alter your diet or find out what works for you?

    Nutrition Diary For Psoriasis Treatment

A nutrition diary is a well-established tool to make notes about your food intake and get a clear picture of what works well for you. In that kind of diary, you write down all you eat over a period. Most likely from Monday through Sunday. Then you repeat that process over the next week and the week after.

You should ask yourself some questions and then dive into the world of data collection.

Ask yourself what are your real preferences? Do you prefer white rice instead of pasta or potatoes? Bread instead of oatmeal? How about are your goals? What do you want to achieve and how do you need to structure your diet? Its a first step towards a solid psoriasis treatment.

Write it all down, everything you eat and see how it unfolds. You should take additional notes about how you felt that day? What about your performance? Any gut issues?

Talk to your doctor about it. You will have your results with you, and you will recognize tendencies. That in turn will help you examining what could potentially trigger your skin and immune system. Or what helps with reducing the burn.

I always thought what the fuck, why me and it was annoying and demoralizing.

Personal battle: Guy Kennaway aimed for the sun

My sister was born with a birthmark on her right cheek. A bluey-brown blob, slightly raised. In my family this was considered a blessing. This was because my mum had informed us that Emma’s birthmark ‘made her more attractive’ and gave her face ‘character’ – apparently a good thing.

This was the manner of our family even when something was as plain as the nose on your face, it could be denied out of existence. The Kennaway first aid box was empty but for a bit of paper that said: ‘STOP FUSSING AND GET ON WITH IT.’

When I developed a rash on my face in my mid-20s, I took the family line and simply denied anything was wrong.

On first seeing the red blotches around my mouth and nostrils, I had no idea of the hell I was descending into. I declared that they were ‘a shaving rash’. Sounded manly and, I hoped, almost enviable, the consequence of my virility and hirsuteness.

Treatment was sponging my face in scalding water. I had been brought up to think of my body as something to be bashed and punished into obedience. The marks – red patches no bigger than postage stamps – came and went I didn’t like them, but I began to accommodate them.

Some things I did, such as drink red wine and party late into the night, my skin disapproved of, and it would be waiting in the morning to reprove me at its most blotchy.

Over the years I became obsessive about the state of my skin.
