Why Diagnosis Is Important

Not only is it crucial for more suitable remedies but also to help rule out skin conditions with almost similar presentations or signs and symptoms.
Common procedures you may undergo include:
- A physician closely looking at the affected penile skin while/asking questions like what you feel
- Tissue biopsy where scrapping is removed and then is examined under a microscope
In many cases, a differential diagnosis would be preferred where a clear examination to distinguish psoriasis from other diseases/conditions are not reached at.
In that case, you may be asked to have blood tests, medical review of past treatments

How To Be Intimate When You Have Genital Psoriasis
If you have genital psoriasis, you can still be intimate. Following this advice can help reduce irritation:
When the skin on or around your genitals is raw, postpone sex.
Before sex, gently cleanse the area. Be sure to use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Cleansing will also help prevent psoriasis medication from rubbing onto your partner.
Men: Use a lubricated condom. Whether a man or woman has genital psoriasis, this lessens the risk of irritating the inflamed area.
After sex, gently wash the area. This helps reduce irritation. If you are using medicine, apply it.
Psoriasis is not contagious
If you have sex with someone who has psoriasis, you will not get psoriasis. Psoriasis is not contagious. Its not a sexually transmitted disease.

What Is Genital Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a common, long-term scaly skin condition that affects approximately 2% of the population. Genital psoriasis affects the genital skin, which includes the pubic area, vulva or penis, skin folds including natal cleft, and buttocks. It is known as anogenital psoriasis when psoriasis also affects perianal skin. Psoriasis does not affect mucosal surfaces.
Psoriasis is one of the most common diseases affecting anogenital skin. It can be part of more generalisedplaque psoriasis, but it may also be the only affected area in 25% of cases. Rarely, generalised and localisedpustular psoriasis can also affect the genital skin.
Genital skin can also be affected in inverse or flexural psoriasis, psoriasis that mainly affects the skin folds. Genital psoriasis may be associated with considerable discomfort and embarrassment, and may severely impair the quality of life and sexual well-being of those affected.

What Causes Penile Psoriasis
Penile psoriasis can occur in both circumcised and uncircumcised males. With this condition, red lesions can be seen on the glands and shaft of the penis. It can also appear anywhere in the groin area. The most common type of psoriasis of the penis is inverse psoriasis. It doesnt have the scaling that is typically seen in plaque psoriasis, but instead, it usually shows up as smooth lesions or patches that are dry, shiny, and red or pink. This condition can flare-up without any apparent triggers or causes.
Just like other cases of psoriasis, penile psoriasis can be triggered by many things contraceptives like spermicidal creams, tight-fitting clothes, or sexual intercourse are common causes of this condition. Other known causes of this condition include:
- Dryness of penis skin
- Irritation on the skin of the penis
What Should You Do
What should you do if you have warts that look like a picture of genital warts that you see here? You should begin treatment as soon as possible to prevent the condition from worsening, to prevent itching and discomfort, and to lessen the risk of spreading the condition to any partners. If youre not sure about your diagnosis, though, you should see a doctor confirm that you have genital warts and not some other condition that looks similar.
If you do have genital warts, you have a number of treatment options, including:
Prescription creams. Some must be applied by a physician but others can be applied by you at home. Use exactly as directed and be sure to apply directly to warts, as they may cause irritation or discomfort if they get on unaffected skin.
Electrotherapy. Physicians can burn off warts in order to remove them.
Cryotherapy. Physicians can freeze off warts, as well.
Laser therapy. This is usually reserved for severe cases or for cases in which warts cannot be removed in other ways for some reason.
Natural Remedies. Many people prefer natural remedies for genital warts, for a number of reasons. They carry a much lower risk of side effects, they are generally affordable, can be purchased without a prescription, and dont need to be applied by a physician. Not all-natural remedies are safe for use on the sensitive genital area, though, so read the label carefully before using it.

Tips For Managing Genital Psoriasis Symptoms
The location of genital psoriasis can intensify symptoms. One of the characteristics of psoriasis is the tendency for it to get worse with any kind of skin trauma, Ellis says. In the groin area, that trauma can be caused by too-tight clothing, skin rubbing on skin, athletic activity, and sex. All of these may make symptoms worse, Ellis says.
Wearing loose clothing can help. Keeping skin hydrated is also an important part of management, says Ellis.
Here are some tips for caring for skin when you have genital psoriasis, according to the American Academy of Dermatology:
- Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid potentially irritating deodorant or antibacterial soaps and body washes.
- Apply fragrance-free moisturizer to the psoriasis after bathing, when skin is still damp. Also apply when the area feels dry to reduce rubbing and irritation. A good rule of thumb for products: the fewer ingredients on the label, the better.
- Use quality toilet paper.
- Avoid contact between genital psoriasis and urine or feces.
- Get plenty of fiber in your diet. A high-fiber diet or a fiber supplement will ease bowel movements.
- Avoid long, hot baths.
- Apply cool compresses to dry and itchy areas.
The bottom line: Let your dermatologist know about any symptoms, Ellis emphasizes. We have amazing treatments.
Ways Of Easing Penile Psoriasis
The good thing about penile psoriasis is that there are many ways of relieving the physical discomfort . While it may look like a desiccated salami, it can still feel great. You just have to treat it right, baby!
The more you touch it, the worse it gets. If you see psoriasis appearing, its best to go easy on the sex/masturbation, because any action will just mean further aggravating the skin and making it sore. For me, 2 to 3 days is enough for it to be back to normal.
Wear 100% cotton underwear and loose trousers. Now, you dont have to go the way of MC Hammer and get yourself parachute pants, but hipster, penis-rubbing, skin-tight jeans are a bad choice. So is tight underwear, latex, spandex and other ridiculously groin suffocating garb. Cotton allows the skin to breathe properly and absorb extra moisture, which means that any penile psoriasis wont be further aggravated by the type of clothes you wear. I stick to boxers, but Im sure Y-fronts or whatever else is fine if its cotton.
The third words of wisdom are to use moisturizer! Moisturizing the dry areas in the morning can make the daytime more tolerable but you will have to experiment with what brands to use to get something non-greasy . For me personally, a bit of vaseline works well after the shower, but other hypoallergenic creams are just as good.

Creams For Penis Psoriasis
Treatment using creams can really work to improve psoriatic symptoms on the genitals since the skin allows for excellent absorption.
- Some of the OTCs creams or ointments which contain Dithranol, Tazarotene should be avoided because they cause irritation
- Steroidal creams should be applied as directed
- You should not exceed the application duration even if the symptoms do not get better or improve
Now Lets Talk About Sex With Genital Psoriasis
Not surprisingly, genital psoriasis can complicate your sex life. Indeed, more than 40 percent of people with psoriasis report some kind of sexual dysfunction, likely due to the emotional stressors that go along with the condition, according to a report published in December 2018 in the New Zealand journal Psoriasis.
If genital psoriasis is causing issues with intimacy, sometimes it helps for a patient and their partner to come to a doctor visit together,” Ellis says.
One important thing to share with a partner: Genital psoriasis is not contagious.
More tips to make sex easier:
- Avoid sex when the genital area is inflamed or raw.
- Use topical medication in genital areas only as directed by your doctor. Dont try to speed healing by using more.
- Keep your genital area clean wash gently after any sexual activity.
- Use a lubricated condom to avoid irritating inflamed areas.

What Is Psoriasis In General
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that impacts at least 8 million people in the United States alone, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. When you have psoriasis, your immune system speeds up your bodys production of skin cells. This leads to a buildup of dead cells on your skins surface, and that buildup turns into red, gray, or purple plaques that may burn or itch. How psoriasis looks depends on your skin tone, with lesions appearing red, pink, or salmon-colored on lighter skin tones, and purple or grayish on darker skin tones.
These areas, also called plaques, often show up on your scalp, elbows, and knees, but they can appear pretty much anywhere on your body. Plaques are typically described as scaly, meaning that they feel hard to the touch and peel away from the skin.
Psoriasis flares are driven by inflammation thats happening in your body. That means that while plaques are the most visible symptom of psoriasis, they certainly arent the only symptom. Psoriasis is linked to other inflammatory conditions, including psoriatic arthritis, according to a 2015 study published in the journal Anais Brasilieros de Dermatologia.2

Ways To Avoid Irritating Genital Psoriasis
To get the best results from treatment and avoid flares, you want to avoid irritating genital psoriasis. The following can help you do just that:
When treating genital psoriasis, use the treatment that your dermatologist prescribed for this area. Psoriasis treatment that youre using on another part of your body can be harmful in the genital area. Tazarotene can irritate the area, making genital psoriasis worse. Any type of phototherapy can increase your risk of developing genital cancer. Strong coal tar therapy may also increase the risk of genital cancer.
Tell your dermatologist if the treatment irritates any skin in your genital area.
Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. When bathing, you want to avoid deodorant or antibacterial soaps and body washes. These can irritate the delicate skin, causing genital psoriasis to flare.
Moisturize. Gently applying a fragrance-free moisturizer to the psoriasis after bathing and when the area feels dry can reduce chaffing and irritation.
Use quality toilet paper. This can help reduce irritation.
Avoid getting urine or feces on genital psoriasis. These can cause psoriasis to flare.
Wear loose-fitting underwear and clothing. Tight-fitting clothing can cause friction, which can worsen genital psoriasis.
Get plenty of fiber in your diet. Eating a high-fiber diet or taking a fiber supplement will ease bowel movements.
