The Heartbreak Of Psoriasis Commercial

Heart Attacks And Psoriasis

Tegrin ad, 1969

If you have psoriasis, it places you at a higher risk for having a heart attack when compared to someone who doesnt have psoriasis. The old saying from a 1970s TV commercial, the heartbreak of psoriasis, is true! If you have a little bit of psoriasis, then the risk is a little bit. If you have a medium amount of psoriasis, then the risk is medium, and if you have a lot of psoriasis, your risk for a heart attack is high. Why is this the case? The amount of inflamed skin due to psoriasis that we can see with our eyes is directly correlated with the amount of inflamed tissue that occurs on the inside of the body. More specifically, inflammation from the skin spills into the bloodstream and causes the inner linings of arteries to become inflamed. This, in turn, makes the arteries more likely to become blocked, which can then lead to things like heart attacks and strokes. Emerging new evidence suggests that treatments for psoriasis, like the biologics Stelara and Cosentyx, improve the skin and are then likely to decrease the risk of heart attacks. This makes psoriasis much more than a cosmetic skin disease, and more of a general health issue, for those who suffer from it. Coping With Heartbreak Of Psoriasis

In addition to coping with psoriasis, patients must also endure rigorous treatment programs, while usually successful, sometimes results in less than desirable results. This can be aggravating and depressing, as the continued reactions from people repelled by the disfiguring skin lesions only deepen the anxiety and shame of patients suffering from the disease.

An article “Interpersonal Concerns and Psychological Difficulties of Psoriasis Patients: Effects of Disease Severity and Fear of Negative Evaluation” appeared in a 1998 edition of Health Psychology. In it, authors Leary et al discuss a finding in one study that indicated, “19 percent of patients reported incidents of blatant rejection in which they were explicitly asked to leave a restaurant, health club, swimming pool, etc. because of their psoriasis.

The authors suggest that psoriasis patients would benefit from receiving the same kind of counseling provided for people suffering from social phobia and/or social anxiety. Psychotherapeutic interventions in which patients are given instructions on how to reduce preoccupations with the self during social interactions as well as decreasing the motivations fueling the need for social approval.

Immunodermatology: Part : Practical Immunology

In Dr Blauvelts view, there are three major cell types involved in psoriasis pathogenesis: 1) dendritic cells 2) T cells and 3) keratinocytes. Targeting

Cyndi Lauper And ‘the Heartbreak’ Of Psoriasis

Lauper shares her psoriasis story and encourages others to speak out.

Throughout her 30-year career, Cyndi Lauper has inspired many people with her hit songs like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time After Time.” Today, the Grammy-, Tony- and Emmy Award-winning singer, songwriter and actress shows her true colors for a different reason: She has psoriasis and is speaking out about the physical, social and emotional effects of this condition.

Lauper was on tour when psoriasis first flared on her scalp. She’d just dyed her hair and initially thought the sores on her head were some type of bug. A doctor confirmed it was scalp psoriasis.

For a while, a shampoo kept it under control, but when Lauper scratched near her ear, there would be flakes.

“My poor stylist, I remember, she got me this shirt with spots all over it so you couldn’t tell,” Lauper said.

Her psoriasis changed into what Lauper thought was a rash, but then it started to spread. At one point, Lauper said, it felt like the psoriasis began to grow over her entire body. When it got really bad, she would just lay in bed.

Like many other people with psoriasis, Lauper struggled with the physical and emotional aspects of living with this chronic autoimmune disease.

COSENTYX TV Commercial,

Is Your Stomach to Blame?

Who would have thought that a severe psoriasis outbreak could start because of something going wrong inside of your stomach and intestines? Yet, new research developed by psoriasis expert Edgard Cayce shows a distinct link between a leaky gut and a scaly psoriatic episode. According to Cayce, the primary source of psoriasis can be found in the intestinal tract, where toxins are leached into the body. This causes the immune system to react by thickening the skin. At the same time, the skin tries to purge the toxins through its layers, which can cause scabs and sores to form.

Could Arthritis Be the Cuplrit?

The intestines arent the only link to psoriasis found by researchers arthritis seems to also contribute to it. As many as one-third of all psoriasis patients eventually develop some form of psoriatic arthritis. Unlike normal forms of arthritis, those with psoriatic arthritis do not exhibit a rheumatoid factor when their blood is tested. This indicates that the arthritic condition comes solely from either the psoriasis itself or the underlying cause of the skin affliction.

Could a Virus Be the Cause?

Arthritis has been linked to certain virus and so have other auto-immune disorders. This leads some researchers to think that psoriasis too may start with a virus, which is what kicks the immune system into overdrive.

The Link Between Psoriasis And The Immune System

No one ever really considered that the immune system had any real role in psoriasis, or its painful outbreaks. Not until a new drug Cyclosporine was offered to arthritis patients. What happened next was both surprising and unexpected. Patients who were prescribed the immune suppressing drug for their arthritis symptoms , began to report a decrease in their skin attacks. Without warning, researchers were faced with the theory that the immune system could be causing psoriasis.

It didnt take long before researchers began to figure out the mystery of psoriasis in regards to how the immune system can impact it.

The Role of the Immune System on the Skin

The immune system is responsible for standing guard and attacking any invaders which penetrate the body. Since the skins main job is to act as the bodys first defense mechanism against invasion, it is no wonder that the immune system works in close connection with each layer of the skin. Heres how it all works:

1. Immune cells patrol the entire body for dangers. The Heartbreak of Psoriasis Commercial

2. When an invader is detected, these immune send out chemical and nervous system messages to the immune system to ready itself for an attack

World Psoriasis Day 29 Octobre 2022

The “heartbreak of psoriasis” is a metaphorical statement that a television commercial for a coal-based topical ointment once popularized. The phrase refers to the emotional distress in addition to the physical stress of the disease.

Due to recent research concerning the correlation between psoriasis and heart disease, this phrase can now indicate what an article in a 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found upon reviewing these studies:

  • Blood markers linked with psoriasis, especially TNF-a, indicate a type of inflammation associated with atherosclerosis.
  • Factors exacerbating psoriasis such as obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are also factors related to the eventual emergence of heart disease.
  • A few studies found patients suffering from severe psoriasis are also as risk for coronary heart disease , independent of other factors.

If you can remember the original commercial for this, touting a product called Tegrin , you are an experienced producer. The term though has long outlived the television spot, and in fact many newer commercials for immunosuppressant agents now populate the airways. Jak Inhibitors In Atopic Dermatitis: Historical Use And Mechanisms Of Action

1985 Tegrin Medicated Shampoo Commercial

Transcript:

Christopher G. Bunick, MD, PhD: As we start our second segment, its going to be focused on JAK inhibitors and what theyre going to do for our atopic dermatitis patients. Dr Lio, Ill start with you for this segment. Could you please talk about the trajectory of biologic and targeted therapies in atopic dermatitis, and how the landscape and attitudes towards these agents has been shifting over the past decade?

Peter A. Lio, MD: Absolutely. I think were lucky because those who have come before us have already outlined this trajectory. For example, with psoriasis, weve seen psoriasis go from the old commercial talking about the heartbreak of psoriasis, just sort of suffering with it, to the crudest topicals that we had, to some of the very, frankly, kind of dangerous immunosuppression medicines that were used with middling effect, to the first biologics in psoriasis, to increasingly refining this, and watching as the drugs we had get better, that treat to target has actually continued to elevate it as well.

So, its been so neat, as we get these new tools, I think that reframes the entire discussion so that we can say to a patient, well, maybe getting just a little bit better isnt good enough. Now we actually have the potential to get you a heck of a lot better and maybe even clear or almost clear, nearly so.

Straight Dope Message Board

I was watching Match Game PM the other night, and they were playing the round where the contestant picks three celebs to guess the phrase, and then they go with the answer that will probably be the most popular .

The phrase was Heartbreak < blank> : Brett Somers chimes in with Hotel. Good one. Charles Nelson Reilly comes up with Ridge. So far so good.then Richard Dawson says of psoriasis. And is greeted with much applause!!So the contestant goes with Hotel, which is number one, but of psoriasis was number two!!

Excuse me, but what in the wild wild world of sports does heartbreak of psoriasis mean?? Why use heartbreak – what is so heartbreaking about a skin rash? Was there some psoriasis epidemic in the 70s? Why has everyone but me heard of that phrase before? I was a TV watching kid in the 70s, but I sure as hell dont remember this.

Not helping matters is that the Web has tons of references to heartbreak of psoriasis but no explanation of where that phrase came from, or why it makes any sense to use it.

It was an ad campaign for some skin product. I dont know which one. It promised to help alleve the heartbreak of psoriasis.

Id guess it was a phrase that was very common in the 70s but is completely forgotten today. I saw another phrase in the match round that I had never heard of, but it ranked #1.

I apologize, elfkin477. I would have never belittled the condition itself had I been aware of the severity of it.

All for psoriasis, a roughened, reddened area of the skin caused by an increase in the proliferation of epidermal cells. Although there is no cure for this, there are alternative methods that people suffering from psoriasis can try that may help with the irritation. Some people may even try using CBG oil to help with the symptoms, especially if they feel like they have tried everything else already. Others have said they have tried CBD cream as a topical medication as it can help to reduce inflammation and has also been said to soothe skin. If you currently purchase CBD cream then this CBDistillery Coupon will give you 25% off your next order. As living with something like this can be tough for anyone who has it, it comes as no surprise to find that people are doing all they can to find a method that may work for them.

Thankfully the heartbreak of psoriasis is lessening with medical advances, and most people affected will have positive life insurance consequences and favorable evaluations. But not every case is a benign one, which is what underwriters look for in evaluating this disease.

Traditional Treatment Cautions The Heartbreak Of Psoriasis Commercial

You make an appointment to see your doctor because your psoriasis is flaring. He takes a look and then whips out his prescription pad to order one of the following:

. A prescription strength topical treatment

. phototherapy

. oral and injection therapy

. over the counter drugs

Any of these treatments may work fine to relieve your symptoms and make you feel better for now. The trouble with conventional treatment methods is that they rarely work to cure the underlying cause of this skin condition and that can leave you suffering repeat attacks. Still it is important to know what helps are available, and how they may help or hurt your chance of treatment success.

Topical Ointments The Heartbreak of Psoriasis Commercial

Topical ointments are used at the first sign of psoriasis. If caught early enough they can sometimes stave off a full-blown attack. Unfortunately, most people report becoming immune to them when used often, which makes them useless for long term use. Still, using the occasional cream or gel can help relieve some of your symptoms. Steroids

Both topical and internal steroids can be prescribed to help ease psoriasis swelling inflammation and itching. Immunomodulators

An immune suppressing drug that was originally used to help transplant patients beat organ rejection, Cyclosporine helps to inhibit T lymphocyte production so that scaly plaque is unable to grow on the surface of the skin.

By Andrew Pollack

Are biotechnology companies reaching the limits of how much they can charge for their drugs? One sign of that is the sluggish sales of drugs for psoriasis.

When the biotech industry began rolling out psoriasis drugs a few years ago, experts heralded the new medications as safer, more effective treatments for the skin disease. And the companies Amgen, Genentech and Biogen Idec, arguably the industrys best-known firms forecast a repeat of the success they have had with similarly priced drugs for rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and cancer.

But they may have overestimated the medical establishments willingness to spend $10,000 to $35,000 a year on treatments for psoriasis, a condition that is often, though incorrectly, perceived as merely a cosmetic problem.

Many insurers are insisting that psoriasis patients try older, cheaper therapies first before approving reimbursement of a biotech drug, frustrating some doctors and patients.

Dr. Mark G. Lebwohl, chairman of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and a consultant to many of the drug developers, said he grew so frustrated he had sought help from the New York attorney generals office on a number of occasions to persuade insurance companies to pay for the drugs. The tactic usually worked, he said.

The Heartbreak Of Psoriasis May Affect Your Joints Heart And Mind

Raised, red patches covered with silvery scales on the elbows and knees are the classic sign of plaque psoriasis. Its the most common form of this skin disease, named after an ancient Greek word meaning an itchy or scaly condition. But psoriasis can sometimes take different, more serious forms, and has been linked to other physical and mental health problems.

According to a report in the July issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, psoriasis is a large public health problem, affecting nearly 7 million adults in the United States. The report, based on a survey of 10,676 adults, found that non-Hispanic whites are much more likely to have psoriasis than other racial or ethnic groups. People who were older, obese, and former smokers were also more likely to have had a psoriasis diagnosis.

Most people82%said they had little or only a mild form of psoriasis, meaning that 2% or less of their body surface was affected. About 18% reported moderate to severe disease, defined as covering 3% or more of your body surface. But in some severe cases, as much as half of a persons body surface can be involved. And nearly a third of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiff, painful joints and other debilitating symptoms.
